Budapest weather in general
Budapest’s climate is continental, although recently it has had mediterranean properties as well. Daily differences in temperature are small, warm days are followed by warm nights and vica versa. The weather in different seasons is easily predictable, this makes your job easier when packing.
SPRING
(March-April-May)
Many say that Budapest is the most beautiful at the end of April, beginning of May – this time of the year it resembles a huge garden full of flowers.
Lowest-highest
temperature: ~5-18 C, windy weather
Sunshine: in March typically sunny-cloudy weather, sunshine is not strong yet, it
gets stronger and stronger in April-May
Fall: lots, possible snow in early March, otherwise rain
Must
pack: raincoat or umbrella, layered clothing, waterproof
shoes
Typically lots of rain in March, however, recently we have been getting more and more sunny days. Temperatures rise in April-May, with maximums at 10-21C.
SUMMER
(June-July-August)
Pools and beaches in Budapest are usually full every day, lots of ice cream and beer is consumed.
Lowest-highest
temperature: ~15-35 C, windy during storms
Sunshine: strong and sustained
Fall: not much rain, concentrated in forms of powerful thunderstorms
Must pack: light summer clothes, perhaps a light
raincoat
First warmer days arrive with June, along with the first heavier storms hitting the capital. In July and August, hot days and cozy, warm nights come after each other, interrupted by one or two colder days.
AUTUMN
(September-October-November)
Some say that Budapest’s melancholic beauty in autumn is the best.
Lowest-highest
temperature:~4-20 C, windy weather at the end of the season
Sunshine: medium, getting weaker
Fall: scattered showers, more rain in late October – early November
Must
pack: in September and October layered clothing (there
could be warmer days), in the end of October and in November warmer clothes,
umbrella or raincoat is advised.
There are many nice sunny days in September, but as the trees begin to lose their leaves, the days get colder.
WINTER
(December-January-February)
Budapest is sometimes draggled, but sparklingly beautiful, the smells of the christmas fair can be felt everywhere. The city is filled with baked chestnut and hot wine vendors.
Lowest-highest
temperature: ~-15-5 C, scarcely windy
Sunshine: lots, but the air stays cold
Fall: lots of rain in early December, later occasional snow
Must
pack: warm clothes, waterproof shoes, cap, scarf.
Winter weather is often changing, it is a bit unpredictable. Generally it is cold, the temperature scarcely rises above zero. Usually lots of snow in January-February.
